Generating Chats
Microsoft Co Pilot • Introduction to Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Module 15.1.1: Generating Chats
With Co Pilot, you can create initial prompts and ask follow up questions. Steps are: Open Co Pilot, press E to get to the Ask us anything edit field, and press Enter. Type in a prompt, such as “please provide a detailed description of a hippopotamus.” Tab to the Submit button and press Enter, or just press Enter after typing in your prompt. It takes several seconds for the answer to be generated. Recently, we have not received any feedback to indicate that processing is occurring, but when the screen refreshes by itself, we know it is done. The quickest way to navigate to the response is to return to the top of the page by pressing Control Home, and then press 2 on the Number row to navigate to the level two heading which repeats your prompt, and beneath which you will find the response. Press 6 to navigate to a level 6 Learn More heading, under which you can find links to sources used to generate the response. You might open these to verify the information as well as learn more. A series of buttons then appear, among which are: Copy: Use this to copy the individual prompt and response text to your Clipboard. You can then paste it into a text editor such as Word or Notepad. Export: This is collapsed. Expanding it with the Spacebar presents options for generating a PDF, text, or Word document. Share: Activating this opens a dialog where you can Tab to options for copying, emailing and sharing with social media (Facebook, X, etc.). Co Pilot will then list several suggested follow up questions. To ask your own follow up questions, from anywhere on the screen, press E to quickly return to the Ask us anything edit field, press Enter to get into it, and repeat the above steps. Unlike traditional browser search engines such as Google or Bing where you can only query one thing at a time, AI apps such as Co Pilot remember the context of your queries, so you don’t need to restate anything. For example, we might ask follow up questions like “What color are they?”, or Are they endangered?” There is no need to remind Co Pilot that the topic is hippos. This is why the whole process of prompting and generating responses is called a chat. To start chatting about a new topic, activate the New topic button just above the Ask us anything edit field. It is important to do this rather than just navigating back to the Ask us anything edit field because there is a risk that the app will get confused between your initial topic and your new one.
